Important information about using Marrowbone’s nutrition and feeding guidance.
Educational purposes only
Marrowbone is an educational tool designed to help dog owners understand their dog’s nutrition and support their wellbeing. All content, including nutritional breakdowns, feeding targets, ratio guidance, and articles, is provided for informational purposes only. Nothing within Marrowbone constitutes veterinary advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always consult a qualified veterinarian or board-certified veterinary nutritionist before making significant changes to your dog’s diet, particularly if your dog has an existing health condition.
Individual variation
Every dog is different. Nutritional needs vary significantly based on breed, age, sex, reproductive status, activity level, metabolic rate, and individual health status. The feeding estimates, calorie targets, and nutrient recommendations provided by Marrowbone are general guidelines based on published population averages, they may not be appropriate for every individual dog.
Nutritional estimates
Nutrient values in Marrowbone are derived from published food composition databases, including:
USDA FoodData Central
FEDIAF Nutritional Guidelines for Complete and Complementary Pet Food (2021)
NRC Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats (2006)
These values represent averages for raw ingredients and will vary in practice depending on the specific cut, supplier, season, and origin of the food. Treat all nutritional estimates as approximations, not precise measurements.
Raw feeding ratio guidelines
The BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) ratios used by Marrowbone, such as 80% muscle meat, 10% raw meaty bone, 5% liver, and 5% secreting organ, are widely used community guidelines. They are not a regulatory standard or veterinary recommendation, and they may not be nutritionally complete for all dogs in all circumstances. Some dogs, including puppies, pregnant or lactating females, seniors, and dogs with health conditions, may require tailored nutritional approaches that differ from these standard ratios.
When to consult a vet
Always seek veterinary advice if your dog:
Is losing or gaining weight unexpectedly.
Shows signs of digestive upset or food intolerance.
Has a chronic illness, allergy, or is on medication.
Is a puppy, pregnant, or lactating.
Is a senior dog with changing health needs.
Shows any change in behaviour, energy, coat, or stool quality.
No medical claims
Marrowbone makes no claims that raw feeding will prevent, treat, or cure any disease or medical condition. The benefits of raw feeding are an active area of debate in veterinary science, and individual outcomes will vary.
Limitation of liability
Marrowbone and its team accept no liability for decisions made by users on the basis of nutritional estimates, feeding guidance, or educational content provided within the app. Use the app as one tool among many, alongside regular veterinary check-ups and professional nutritional advice where appropriate.
